Why Thin Strings + High Tension Don’t Automatically Give You More Power

A very common belief in badminton:

“If I use the thinnest string and crank the tension up to 27–28 lbs, I’ll get more power.”

It sounds logical.
In reality, it’s often the reason your shots feel fast—but strangely weak.

The core issue?

Most players are mixing up elasticity and repulsion.


What Is Elasticity?

When the shuttle hits the string bed, the strings deform.

They stretch, store energy, and then return to their original shape.

If this process is efficient, the string bed can:

  • Absorb energy from your swing
  • Store it briefly
  • Release it back into the shuttle

This is what creates solid, penetrating shots.

Good elasticity = energy storage + controlled release


What Is Repulsion?

Repulsion refers to how quickly the string bed snaps back.

  • Faster rebound
  • Sharper sound
  • Quicker shuttle exit

But here’s the key:

Fast rebound does not necessarily mean more stored energy.

If the string barely deforms in the first place,
there’s very little energy to return.

The result?

  • The shuttle leaves quickly
  • But lacks weight and depth

It feels “crisp,” but plays “empty.”


The String Gauge Misconception

Many players assume:

“The thinner the string, the more powerful it is.”

That’s only partially true.

Thicker Strings (0.68–0.70mm)

  • More stretch potential
  • Better energy storage
  • Requires more input force

Good for players who can generate power consistently.


Mid-Range Strings (0.63–0.66mm)

  • Balanced elasticity and repulsion
  • Easier access to power
  • Most forgiving for general players

This is the “sweet spot” for most club-level players.


Ultra-Thin Strings (0.58–0.61mm)

  • Very fast rebound
  • Sharp, satisfying sound
  • Limited energy storage

For many players, this leads to:

Fast shots… but lacking penetration.


The Tension Trap

Tension plays just as important a role.

Too Low

  • String bed feels soft
  • Energy gets absorbed and lost
  • Shots lack control

Optimal Range

  • Strings still deform slightly
  • Energy is stored and returned efficiently
  • Best balance of power and control

Too High

  • Minimal deformation
  • Almost no energy storage
  • Only fast rebound remains

On court, it feels like:

  • Loud contact
  • Fast shuttle exit
  • But no real weight behind the shot

And often:

Your arm gets tired before your shots improve.


The Real Formula for Power

Power is not created by extremes.

It comes from alignment:

Elasticity + Appropriate Tension = Effective Energy Transfer

Not:

Thin string + maximum tension = more power


Practical Takeaway

For most players:

  • 0.63–0.66mm strings
  • Moderate tension range

will give you:

  • Usable power
  • Consistent feel
  • Less physical strain

Final Thought

Repulsion gives you speed.
Elasticity gives you substance.

If you only chase repulsion:

You’ll get sound and speed — but not real power.

If you understand elasticity:

You’ll start hitting cleaner, heavier, and more efficient shots.
